Small Businesses: The Heart of Canada’s Economic Renewal

Small Business.
Big Future

Our Mission

We are a non-profit organization with a singular purpose: to empower Canadian small businesses to survive and thrive in a post-COVID world.

As the pandemic continues to close the doors of small businesses across Canada, the impact on our economy will be profound if we fail to act. Small businesses make up more than 97% of all Canadian companies, and they are the backbone of job creation, innovation, and opportunity in our nation. If we don’t come together now, the fabric of our economy will be forever changed.

The Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB) captured the gravity of this moment with the following statement:

  • “March 2020 has turned out to be a month like no other in Canada’s economic history. Small business sentiment has never been this low in the Business Barometer’s 32-year history, including during the 2008 and 1990 recessions.”
We face an uphill battle. There’s no denying that the Canadian economy will experience a significant hit. But we will recover. How quickly we recover depends on how we unite, collaborate, and face the challenges ahead. Moving forward will require ideas, vision, time, capital, and relentless dedication. We believe, “Together, Moving Forward.”

1.22 Million Small Businesses in Canada

As of December 2022, there were 1.22 million employer businesses in Canada. Of these, 1.19 million (97.8%) were small businesses, 23,395 (1.9%) were medium-sized businesses, and 3,128 (0.3%) were large businesses. Between 2001 and 2020, the number of small businesses increased every year, except for three: in 2013, 2016, and 2020.
Between 2016 and 2020, the average number of small businesses created annually was 100,475, and the average number of small businesses that disappeared annually was 96,548.

22,266 (1.9 percent) were medium-sized businesses

Although all Canadian provinces experienced an increase in new enterprises in December, three provinces stood out. British Columbia was just a little behind Ontario, which led the way with 1,516 new enterprises in December, a 27.14% increase from November. While Ontario’s total number of new businesses opened in December was the highest, British Columbia’s percentage of new businesses opened in December increased by an impressive 87.79% compared to November. Alberta also experienced a 61.98% increase.

Job Creation

Job creation isn’t just about employment—it’s about building a stronger economy. By connecting SMEs with industry leaders, encouraging exploration of new avenues, and fostering partnerships, we help businesses access opportunities they may not have previously considered.

SME Growth

Small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs) in Canada are at a critical juncture. Innovation is the lifeblood of business success, especially for small and medium enterprises. Indigenous-SME Business Magazine

Indigenous-SME Magazine has been quite successful in its goal of providing a forum where owners of small and medium-sized businesses can network while getting useful resources. With our team of experts and extensive research, no one is better placed to understand the needs of small businesses. Not only have we been able to fill the gap when it comes to giving business owners exclusive information that is important for their success, but with their help and the help of business experts, Indigenous-SME is now well-known among many business owners in Canada! However, there is still room for improvement. Although Indigenous-SME is well known for promoting diversity and inclusiveness, we realized we came up short in promoting indigenous-owned businesses from Canada.
